Blood and Urine Tests for Adrenal Tumor Diagnosis

Blood and urine tests are fundamental in the diagnostic process for adrenal tumors. These tests are used to detect abnormal hormone levels that may be indicative of a functional tumor.

Blood tests can directly measure the levels of certain hormones in your bloodstream. In some cases, a 24-hour urine collection may be required. This comprehensive urine analysis provides a measure of how rapidly your body is producing specific hormones over a full day.

Doctors also routinely assess potassium and renin levels. Renin is a protein released by the kidneys in response to low sodium levels. Abnormal levels of aldosterone (a hormone produced by the adrenal glands), sodium, potassium, and renin can be indicative of an aldosteronoma, a specific type of adrenal tumor.

This procedure is critical in differentiating between an aldosteronoma (a single aldosterone-producing adrenal tumor) and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia (a condition where both adrenal glands overproduce aldosterone). Accurate differentiation is essential for targeted treatment following adrenal tumor diagnosis.

During adrenal venous sampling, a thin catheter (hollow tube) is inserted into a vein in the thigh and guided to the veins draining each adrenal gland.
