Erika Diarte-Carr, a 30-year-old mother from Ogden, Utah, has passed away after a courageous battle with terminal cancer. Her diagnosis and subsequent outpouring of community support touched hearts nationwide, culminating in over $1 million raised to secure her children’s future.
Carr, a single mother to a 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter, received a devastating stage 4 terminal cancer diagnosis in May 2022. Her cousin, Angel Rivera, confirmed her passing on October 11, 2024, sharing the news via a heartfelt Facebook post. Rivera wrote of Carr’s valiant fight and gratitude for the immense support she received during her challenging journey.
Erika Carr’s cancer diagnosis came unexpectedly. What she initially believed to be a shoulder injury led to the life-altering news of small cell lung carcinoma. This aggressive cancer, as described by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, is known for its rapid growth in lung tissues. Carr recounted the emotional impact of her diagnosis on her GoFundMe page, launched shortly after receiving the news. She described the moment as one that “changed forever” the lives of herself and her children.

In addition to her cancer battle, Carr faced another health challenge. This past January, she was diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome, a hormonal disorder resulting from excessive cortisol production. Despite these immense health obstacles, Carr’s primary concern remained the well-being of her children.
Facing a worsening prognosis in September 2024, Erika Carr made the difficult decision to discontinue treatment. Her focus shifted to spending precious time with her children and family, prioritizing quality of life in her remaining time. To ensure her children’s future security, she initiated the GoFundMe campaign. The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in, quickly exceeding $1 million. Carr expressed her profound gratitude for the unexpected and extraordinary generosity from both friends and strangers.

The funds raised will be used to cover funeral expenses and, most importantly, establish a trust fund for her son and daughter. This foresight ensures that even in her absence, Erika Carr will continue to provide for her children’s future. Speaking to KTVX-TV in September, Carr conveyed her shock and deep appreciation for the outpouring of support, stating she was “just very grateful for everybody and everything that’s been there.”
Erika Carr’s story, though tragically short, is a testament to a mother’s love and the remarkable compassion of community. Her legacy will live on through her children, secured by the generosity sparked by her courageous journey with cancer.
